Learning To Speak Southern

I'm easily influenced by other voices, literally and figuratively. Yesterday I caught myself saying to a group of campers "Have y'all been to the park yet?"

Recently I was chatting with a co-worker, a lovely retired man from Georgia who speaks with a slow southern drawl. We were discussing some of our less fortunate neighbors and he favored me with a couple phrases that I hadn't heard before.

First, there was "Their driveway don't go all the way to the street" but my favorite was "Yeah, there's no lifeguard in that gene pool."

Feel free to use either of those phrases when necessary.

  1. Hadn't heard the driveway one, but I hear the gene pool one all the time. Mostly from my husband -- but he's from Southern stock (Texas). Born in CA, but "all his people" come from Texas. - Robin
